The State government has allocated ₹10 crore for construction of men’s hostel for the Presidency College, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced on Tuesday. Work on the building would start this year, he said.

The Chief Minister was responding to an appeal from college Principal T. Brahmananda Perumal to build a hostel for men and women at the valedictory of the 175th anniversary of the college.

Mr. Palaniswami said the government would consider the Principal’s request for renovation of the buildings too.

He urged the students to make the best use of the facilities that the institution offered, adding that the college, which had produced many illustrious students, including Nobel laureates, was “waiting to produce more such achievers.”

Higher Education Minister K.P. Anbalagan said the college was the pride of the State as it was established even before the University of Madras.

Three demands

Earlier, Mr. Perumal placed three demands — a hostel each to house 500 male and female students; renovation of the main building of the college and a 2,000-seater auditorium.
