Underground parking to decongest CBD

April 19, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - BENGALURU:

In a move to decongest the city’s traffic, the State government is planning to connect Brigade Road and Commercial Street by creating an underground parking corridor that passes through Kamaraj Road.

Speaking to the media on Monday, City Development Minister K.J. George said the underground parking corridor would be developed on public-private partnership model. Noting that the plan was still at a nascent stage, he said it would be a two-tier corridor facility, where there would be ample space for parking of vehicles that were now occupying space on Brigade Road and Commercial Street. “We are in the process of calling for Expression of Interest for this project,” he said.

Mr. George said though the State had accorded the highest priority for the 63-km Peripheral Ring Road, the escalation in cost of land acquisition was a major hurdle. While the cost of PRR project was Rs. 3,300-crore, it would cost Rs. 8,000 crore for land acquisition, he said.
