A 52-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his farm house at Chinnanayakanapalya of Gubbi taluk in Tumakuru district on Saturday.

The police said that deceased has been identified as Ramakrishnaiah, owner of one-and-a-half acres of land. The police said Ramakrishnaiah had grown arecanut and coconut trees. The four borewells he had sunk had dried up, which has affected the coconut and arecanut trees, they said.

The police added that Ramakrishnaiah had borrowed Rs.55,000 from State Bank of Mysore and Rs.60,000 from a self-help group. They suspect he may have taken the extreme step as he could not repay the loans.

A case has been registered at the C.S. Pura police station.
