During their investigation into the alleged abduction and extortion case registered against former councillor and rowdy V. Nagaraj, the investigative team from Hennur police station took the accused along with his sons Gandhi and Shasthri to their house in Srirampura for a spot inspection. During the process, the police team recovered a few lethal weapons like long knives from the house.
The police, who are questioning the trio, are trying to get information on Nagraj's network involved in the currency exchange racket.
Inquiries so far have revealed that Nagaraj initially used his contacts in Tamil Nadu to exchange the currency in small amount: A tactic he employed to lure more businessmen and realtors with unaccounted demonetised notes, say the police.
“As people started approaching Nagaraj through his associates, he blackmailed them and and even abducted them to extort money,” said a senior police officer.
“Though during the raid we recovered demonetised cash worth ₹ 14.8 crore. The amount could be even higher as Nagaraj might have stashed more money at another location. We are investigating in this angle now,” a senior police officer said.
Nagaraj and his two sons, however, have denied all charges.
