Not a new problem, says BPAC

The spectre of garbage mounds has returned to haunt Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited barely a year after a report by the Bangalore Political Action Committee unearthed the fact that Namma Metro lines had turned into garbage dump yards.

Last May, BPAC had filed a complaint with Upalokayukta Subhash B. Adi after identifying 100 spots on the Purple and Green lines where garbage was being dumped. Around 700 photographs had been taken.

The situation is much better now, according to BMRCL officials who say that dumping at most of the places identified has been stopped. However, some problem areas, like the spot in Malleswaram, exist.

BBMP Commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad said, “This issue was dealt with earlier. We have issued strict warnings and instructions to our officers to immediately stop instances of garbage dumping below flyovers and metro lines. If any such instance is found, we will certainly take strict action against the officers concerned.” — Staff Reporter
