India Rankings 2017: JNCASR is small in size but big on output

The city may be seeing its numerous monikers fading away (garden city, for instance), but what continues to be reaffirmed is its position as a city of science. After all, it hosts two of the best research institutes in the country: Indian Institute of Science, which occupies the top position in the India Rankings 2017 released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), which debuts as the fourth best university in the country.

Anurag Kumar, Director of IISc., said the rankings confirm the importance of the institute in Indian academia. “IISc has featured in Indian and international rankings consistently. We expected it do well in these rankings...we do hope this will help us raise funds to further our research and facilities,” he said.

For JNCASR, its relatively small size - with around 50 faculty members and barely 300 students - had seen it being kept out of many rankings. “This year, we were asked to enter into the rankings. Because of its size, JNCASR had not met the criteria for many other rankings. But, debuting in this list shows the high impact of the publications as well as the patentable research being produced in JNCASR,” said V. Nagaraja, President, JNCASR.

In terms of public perception, the MHRD rankings show JNCASR received 6.92 points while IISc has scored 83.33 out of a maximum of 100.

With HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar saying funding will increase to institutes that do well, Mr. Nagaraja said, “We do hope so. When it comes to research, no amount of funds is enough.”

IIMB misses top slot by a whisker

The Indian Institute of Management Bengaluru missed out on being the best management institute in the country by a whisker (0.14 points). G. Raghuram, Director IIMB, said, “It is especially good to know that we have done exceedingly well in key areas, such as Research and Outreach and Inclusivity, which have been our focus areas in the recent past.”

More universities in top 100

There has been a surge in the number of institutes from the State - particularly, privately run ones - featuring in the rankings. The number of universities from the state has gone up from 5 in 2016 to 8 this year. The number of engineering institutes has increased to 8, from 6 last year. However, with more entrants for pharmacy rankings, Karnataka sees just 4 institutes, compared to 12 last year.

Among private universities, Manipal Academy of Higher Education has made it to the 18th rank, up from 32 last year.

University of Mysore, ranked 36, could have featured in the 2016 rankings too but for a ‘technical issue’. It had failed to upload the requisite documents for the 2016 rankings on time. Dayanand Mane, in-charge Vice Chancellor, said the aim is to break into the top 25. “Our research and publication record in the science field is very good but we are lagging behind in social sciences,” he said.
