The city police are still on the hunt for the man who attacked bank employee Jyothi Uday at an ATM kiosk on Tuesday.
Sources claim the assailant had visited the same kiosk earlier that morning. CCTV camera footage reportedly shows a man resembling him, carrying a bag like the one used by him, outside the kiosk several minutes before Ms. Jyothi went in. Police are verifying this claim.
Phone traced
Meanwhile, the second-hand mobile phone dealer, Abuzar, who had been detained by the police after Ms. Jyothi’s cellphone was traced to his shop in Hindupur of Andhra Pradesh, was produced before the 6th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) court here on Saturday for recording his statements. This was to ensure he could not change his statement later, Joint Commissioner (Crime), Hemanth Nimbalkar, said.
Mr. Abuzar has claimed that a man approached him saying he had lost his wallet and so wanted to sell his phone for Rs. 1,000. The dealer purchased it for Rs. 500.
He was let off after his statement was recorded. He has said he would be able to identify the man if he saw him again, and has agreed to cooperate with the investigation.
Police officers said that teams are scouring the Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh border for the assailant. Police personnel had been despatched with the CCTV camera footage and sketches of the assailants to places such as Anantapur, Chittoor and Gowribidanur.
