In a move that yet again puts a question mark on plans to trifurcate the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Governor Vajubhai Vala has returned the Karnataka Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill to the government seeking clarifications. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. Jayachandra confirmed to The Hindu that the Governor has sought clarifications on “10 to 15 questions”, one of which is if the bill requires presidential approval.

“I am yet to see the contents of the letter since I am in my constituency,” he said. While the State Election Commission has announced elections to the BBMP on August 22, the elections would depend on the fate of the bill.

If it gets cleared by the Governor, then the elections would have to be indefinitely postponed and the civic body would go in for trifurcation as proposed.
