Sri Thyagaraja Gana Sabha Trust is organising a five-day music festival from May 15 to mark the Thyagaraja and Purandara Dasara Aradhana and Sri Shankara Jayanti.
Being held at Sri Vani Education Centre in Rajajinagar, the 42nd annual festival features concerts by eminent musicians, a book release, talks and felicitation to five eminent personalities from various fields.
Musicologist and critic Mysore V. Subramanya will preside over the festival.
Addressing the media here earlier in the week, trust president M. Ananth said this year’s event would see the participation of 43 artistes, including percussionists.
The inauguration will be followed by vocal concert by T.S. Sathyavathi. Poet H.S. Lakshminarayana Bhatta will deliver a talk on ‘Manku Thimmana Kaggadalli Advaitha’ (Advaitha philosophy and Manku Thimmana Kagga , a popular work of D.V. Gundappa) in the morning.
The calendar of events of the festival will be: May 16, vocal concert by Madhuvanthi and party at 5 p.m., and vocal by S. Shankar and party at 7 p.m. On May 17, vocal by Divya Giridhar at 5 p.m., and Rajalakshmi Thirunarayanan and Ratnaprabha Krishna will present composition of Veena Sheshanna, in coordination with Mysore V. Subramanya.
On May 18, there will be bhajans by Sri Jayaranga Rasadhwani Bhajana Mandali at 10 a.m. and vocal concert by Anjali Sriman at 5 p.m. At 7 p.m., Sri Mookambika Talavadya Sangeetha Kalashale will present a percussion ensemble, ‘Sunada Vadya Vybhava’, directed by musician B.K. Chandramouli.
On the valedictory day (May 19), Mysore V. Subramanya will be conferred the Kalabhushana award. A book on music, Karnataka Sangeetha in last 100 years and future? , written by flautist B.K. Anantharam will be released by Sanskrit scholar and retired police officer P.S. Ramanujam.
Five eminent personalities, including gottuvadya player Gayatri Rajapur Kassebaum and mridangam player M.T. Rajakesari will be honoured.
All programmes are open to the public and are free.
