The Central Division police have nabbed a gang of five habitual offenders for robbing gold smugglers.

The racket came to light when the police, based on a tip off, picked up Krishnasham Mangu (37) from SJ Park area while he was trying to dispose off one kilogram of gold biscuits in the market area on November 5, which he had robbed from one of the gold smugglers.

Based on his information, the police picked up other associates Syed Mustafa, K. Vennugopal, Thippeswamy, Yuvaraj and Kanthi Narendra Babu and recovered another one kilogram of gold biscuits.

The accused confessed that they would get information about the gold smugglers from the agents who facilitated the sale of smuggled gold.

The agents in turn gets a share of the booty while the gang would keep the rest and distribute it among themselves, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), Sandeep Patil said.

The gang targetted only gold smugglers since they could not complain to the police, Mr. Patil said.

We have taken them into custody for further questioning to expose the racket in detail, he added.
