An alert beat constable not only averted a burglary at a house in HMT Layout at Vidyaranyapura but also caught two men committing the crime early on Tuesday morning.
In the process, he was injured. In ‘self defence’, police claimed that two burglars were shot at after they did not heed to warnings by police personnel and the former reportedly attacked them with an iron rod.
Nagabhushan, a head constable with Vidyaranyapura police was on night rounds in HMT Layout.
“I observed that this house was locked for four days. Newspapers and milk packets were lying in the compound. But on Monday night, I saw activity in the house and the gate was locked from outside,” he said.
Mr. Nagbhushan alerted night rounds Sub Inspector Bhyrappa, who in turn alerted Vidyaranyapura Police Inspector Puneeth, who rushed to the spot with enforcements.
Mr. Puneeth told The Hindu that the police team entered the house through the main door that was broken open by the burglar duo.
“We confronted the two men on the first floor where they had taken all the valuables and were ready to flee. When we asked them to surrender, one of them assaulted our head constable with an iron rod. I fired in the air. But when it did not help, I shot at the burglars in their legs,” he added.
