The death of a man, who was attacked by a group of people a couple of days ago, triggered tension in Keelukote and Vibhutipur localities in the town on Monday. M. Kumar (55), a moneylender, died in a private hospital in Bengaluru on Sunday and his body was brought here on Monday.
Belonging to the Dalit community, Kumar was injured seriously as he was attacked with lethal weapons on Friday night and was admitted to a hospital in Bengaluru where he succumbed to injuries. The police have arrested four persons including Kashi Vishwanath, a councillor, and a lawyer, Narasimhamurthy, in connection with the crime.
Kumar and his son, Arunkumar, were arrested in a case connected with the murder of a youth, Abhilash, some months ago. Abhilash was a friend of Vishwanath and the latter reportedly hatched a conspiracy to kill Kumar, who was out on bail, to take revenge for his friend’s death.
Superintendent of Police Divya Gopinath camped in the area. Heavy police security was organised in the area to prevent any untoward incident. Liquor shops were closed from Sunday evening till Monday midnight as a precautionary measure.
