City roads claim three lives

Published - October 02, 2011 11:22 am IST - Bangalore:

Three people died and one was injured in three separate road accidents involving two-wheelers in the city since Friday night.

On Saturday, Pooja Salgaonkar (22), a third year Master of Computer Applications student at Mount Carmel College, was run over by a lorry that swerved when she tried to overtake it in Yelahanka Police Station limits. The police arrested the lorry driver and seized the vehicle.

Heavy rain and frequent power outages appear to have taken their toll on Friday night when a pillion rider was killed and the rider injured after their two-wheeler rammed a stationary pickup truck parked near APMC Yard. The Rajajinagar traffic police said that Umesh (18) was riding pillion with Gangadhar (23) when the motorbike rear-ended the bigger vehicle. While Umesh died on the spot, Gangadhar is in hospital, battling for his life.

Similarly, Ananthakrishnappa (37) was killed when his motorcycle slammed into a stationary commercial vehicle in front of Manyata Tech Park on Outer Ring Road. He was rushed to hospital where he died, the Hebbal traffic police said.

Held for rape attempt

A man was arrested by the police for attempting to rape a 20-year-old woman near a construction site at which they worked, at Kasturinagar on Friday afternoon.

Mithun Sheik (21), a construction worker from West Bengal, was arrested by the Ramamurthynagar police for attempting to rape the woman, who is also from the same State, at a nearby playground.
