Bangalore University’s ambitious plan of introducing a credit-based undergraduate (UG) programme and choice-based credit system in the postgraduate (PG) programme got the nod of the academic council on Thursday.
Under the restructured UG scheme, students will have an exit option after completion of two years at which point they will be awarded an associate degree in arts, science or commerce. If the students complete the three-year course, they will be awarded a Bachelor’s degree and an honours degree at the end of the four-year programme. Vice-Chancellor B. Thimme Gowda said the restructured programme would help students who abandon courses for various reasons. “They can come back later and complete the course if they wish to,” he said.
The proposal to provide an exit option at the end of three years for students pursuing the five-year integrated MA course in Social Science was also approved. Such students will be awarded a B.A. in Social Science.
Mr. Gowda said that the changes were based on the guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
New courseThe council also decided to permit St Joseph’s Evening College to start an MCom. course from the 2014-2015 academic year.
A proposal by V.H.D Central Institute of Home Science to start two new UG diploma courses in Creche Management and Interior Decoration and Housekeeping, under the community college scheme, was put on hold. K.S. Roopa, co-ordinator, Community College, V.H.D. Central Institute of Home Science, said UGC had approved the course and agreed to release Rs. 30.2 lakh for these programmes.
