Election likely on April 23 at the first meeting of the council

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will decide its mayoral candidate for the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Council within three days, according to party city unit president and MLA B.N. Vijay Kumar.

Mr. Kumar told The Hindu on Thursday that the party city unit's leaders would hold consultations with their State unit counterparts, including Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, State party president K.S. Eshwarappa and national general secretary H.N. Ananth Kumar in two or three days to decide the next Mayor.

Mayoral election

However, the formal election of the Mayor would tentatively be on April 23 when the first meeting of the newly formed BBMP Council would be held, Mr. Vijay Kumar said. However, pointing out that the councillors would have to take oath on the day, he said the mayoral election would take place the next day if the oath-taking process was delayed. All the 10 members of a party leaders' committee, formed to monitor the preparation for the BBMP polls, will be present during the consultations on mayoral candidate.

Two candidates

He hinted that the mayoral choice had narrowed down to two — S. K. Nataraj and B.S. Sathyanarayana. The State unit leaders would choose one of them.Such a consultation had been scheduled for Wednesday night.

However, it had to be put off following the death of party MLA Chandrashekhar Patil Revur, he said.
