It comes as part of a survey to be launched by the Centre

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched a pilot survey to identify manual scavengers and their dependents in the city to enable their rehabilitation.

This comes as part of the survey to be launched by the Union government with a similar aim, BBMP Commissioner Rajneesh Goel said on Friday.

The survey will cover those who are continuing with manual scavenging within BBMP limits and their socioeconomic, education, health and skills conditions. The survey will also identify dry toilets and open drainages that entail manual scavenging, a press release said.

Manual scavengers are those who don’t use any modern equipment, but use their hands to clear night soil, the release said, and sought information about the families and places. Those involved in manual scavenging may opt for self-declaration in the scheduled forms.
