Passersby on a crowded main road in OMBR Layout, off Ramamurthynagar, were shocked on Monday afternoon to see a man chase a woman and stab her in the back repeatedly before stabbing himself in the neck, assuming that she was dead.

The woman was later identified as Manjula (27), a resident of Kasturi Nagar, while the man, Stephen Anthony (30), is her gym instructor.

Both were rushed to a nearby private hospital and are in a critical condition.

Later in the day, Stephen Anthony was operated on at Victoria Hospital. Sources said that his chances of survival are slim.

The condition of Manjula is also critical, but she is stable and is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Satish Kumar said the police were unable to get more details as they could not record their statements.
