The gym instructor, who stabbed the woman on the streets of OMBR Layout, was allegedly stalking her.

A senior police officer said that they identified the assailant from the documents on him. A visit to the gym where he worked opened up the case for them.

Manjula (27), a resident of Kasturi Nagar, has been married for six years to Harsha, a private bank employee. They have a four-year-old son. She was a regular at the gym where she got acquainted with Stephen. However, sources say, she stopped visiting the gym around a month ago. Police sources said that Stephen wanted to marry Manjula, but she was not interested.

Police suspect Stephen tailed Manjula when she left her house to pick up her son from school on Monday afternoon. Both were on two-wheelers. Stephen overtook Manjula 4C Main Road and obstructed her path. They got into a verbal spat.

Raju, a witness and the complainant in the case, said: “Before people could intervene, the man brandished a dagger. The woman tried to flee. She ran into the compound of a house. The man blocked the entrance. She was trapped. He stabbed her brutally. Passersby rushed into the compound hearing her scream. However, by the time we went in, the man was also lying in a pool of blood as he had stabbed himself in the neck.”

Another witness Charumathi, in her statement to the police, said that when she, along with another woman, tried to block the man’s way into the compound, he threatened to kill himself.

Manjula was repeatedly stabbed on the back, below the neck and also suffered a major injury on her face. Her family was unavailable for comment.
