A day after being accused of taking photographs of a woman on his mobile phone at a coffee shop here, P. Ravindranath, Additional Director-General of Police, Karnataka State Reserve Police, tendered his resignation on Tuesday.

His resignation letter, handed over to the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police L.R. Pachau on Tuesday evening, came after the High Grounds Police, acting on the victim’s complaint, registered an FIR under Section 354 of Indian Penal Code for outraging the modesty of a woman and Section 506 of IPC for criminal intimidation.

However, Mr. Ravindranath’s name does not figure in the complaint and also in the FIR, as the complaint is against an unidentified person. On Monday morning, Mr. Ravindranath, who was in civil dress, was hauled up by the police from the coffee shop after the woman accused him of clicking her photos on his mobile phone and behaving in an objectionable manner. Sources in the Police Department said that the police official did not disclose his identity until he was in the lock-up at the High Grounds Police Station. He was later let off as the complaint had not been filed then.

The sources said that he went to the Vikasa Soudha on Tuesday evening, where Home Minister K.J. George was holding a review meeting of the Police Department and tendered his resignation to Mr. Pachau.

Mr. Pachau confirmed the receipt of the resignation letter. Meanwhile, Mr. George said that a decision on accepting the resignation before a probe is completed was out of the question.

The sources said that the case is likely to be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department.
