Eighty-four candidates — most of them Independents — filed their nomination papers on Friday for the May 5 elections to the Legislative Assembly. With this, the total number of nominations has gone up to 111.
Most politicians shied away from filing nominations on April 10 because it was Amavasye . April 11 was a holiday for Ugadi.
Meanwhile, addressing presspersons here, Chief Electoral Officer Anil Kumar Jha said the Central Administrative Tribunal had issued a notice to the Election Commission on an application filed by the former Bangalore Police Commissioner B.G. Jyothi Prakash Mirji challenging his transfer order. “We have got a notice and are studying it,” he said.
On April 5, Mirji was transferred and Principal Secretary (Home) Raghavendra H. Auradkar posted in his place.
An official notification said the order was issued as per the direction of Election Commission “for smooth conduct of elections in a free and fair manner”.
The CEO said: “the commission is also studying the CAT order on transfer of eight IAS officers.”
Applications
He said 17.36 lakh applications were received seeking inclusion of names in the voters list. Already, officials have cleared 11.26 lakh applications.
