Deploying machinery in the Mahatma Gandhi NREGS works is allowed only under special conditions and the proposals for the same would be accepted only under the provisions of the Act, said Special Chief Secretary to the Department of Rural Development Dinesh Kumar here on Wednesday.

Basic amenities

Use of machinery was not allowed since the scheme was meant to provide employment along with creating assets and basic amenities to the poor, he said at a regional review meeting, in which officials of DWMA and 11 line departments from Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and East Godavari had participated.

Commissioner of RD Department B. Ramanjaneyulu, Additional Joint Commissioner Chakravarthi, Project Manager of Jalasiri Varaprasad were also present.

To a request from Visakhapatnam Collector N. Yuvaraj, the Special Chief Secretary said the Collectors would be authorised to fix the rate for drilling of borewells and casings required for the borewells.

A suggestion to provide 90 per cent funding for cement roads in the villages would also be considered, he said.

Mr. Dinesh Kumar wanted the officials to successfully implement the Rs. 5,350-crore estimated convergence plan for the NREGS. The targets set according to the schemes must be reached without fail, he said. He also reminded the officials that funds meant for individual toilets must be spent before July 31.
