It will take two years for detailed study of the factors causing beach erosion so as to suggest preventive measures, Municipal Commissioner Pravin Kumar has said.

“The studies on erosion have not yet been completed. NIOT is still continuing its studies and we are in touch with the Netherlands-based consultancy Deltares. The estimated cost of the study over a period of two years will be between Rs.3 crore and Rs.3.5 crore,” he told a press conference here.

The data for the last 20 to 25 years on how the beach front developed had to be studied to zero in on what was causing the erosion. After which measures, including whether structural intervention was required, or only nourishment would do had to be implemented.

The terms and conditions were almost ready. However, the procedure is yet to be finalised. Whether to call for tenders or do it through NIOT/Deltares is also to be decided, he said.

Single source also can be finalised but with World Bank approval, Mr. Pravin Kumar said.

They wanted GVMC to collect data but GVMC had no capacity for it but would only assist the agency as a client, he said.

The situation was being watched regularly and the District Collector and the Port Chairman and the government were being apprised of the situation, the Commissioner said.
