On the housing anvil is a mega project for senior citizens, a modern home on a five-acre site through Rajiv Swagruha. The proposal was disclosed by V.N. Vishnu, Vice-Chairman of Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority, at the tenth anniversary celebrations of Visranthi, a home for the aged run by Senior Citizens’ Welfare Council in the city.
Mr Vishnu visited ‘SECURE’, the senior citizens’ project of VUDA in Sagarnagar in the city. During the visit, he said that the managing director of Rajiv Swagruha, Shalini Misra, had proposed the mega project when he had met her in Hyderabad some time ago and added that the project was likely to be taken up as a joint venture.
On a plea for providing accommodation to Visranthi, he said it could apply for a site so that he could send the proposal to the government. He expressed satisfaction at the functioning of the organisation.
Visranthi honoured a 106-year-old woman, Chavatapalli Venkamma, on the occasion. Her nephew and retired principal of VS Krishna College, Bhagawan, said she was still helping him in his daily routines, particularly in cutting vegetables for preparing the meal. She climbs the staircase every day to offer prayer to Tulasi plant there, he revealed.
Retired professor of Telugu in Andhra University, K. Malayavasini, thanked Mr. Vishnu for the immediate response.
Former legal officer and president of Hindustan Shipyard Retired Employees’ Association, Y. Sankara Rao, commended the organisers for running an old age home successfully for ten years, that too not on commercial lines but with a motto of service.
President of Visranthi A. Suryakumari said there were 200 members but only ten could be accommodated at the present premises.
