Bharatiya Janata Party Kisan Morcha on Thursday feared that the country would face severe shortage of foodgrains in future as the UPA government was not keen on promoting agriculture in the country. Addressing a media conference here, Kisan Morcha State president Jammula Shyam Kishore, vice-president Pudi Tirupati Rao and BJP district president Tankala Durga Rao alleged that the Government was least bothered to ensure adequate supply of fertilizers and seed during this khariff season.
“It is the prime responsibility of the Government to understand the farmers' problems as many of them are fed up with the agricultural activity with the wrong policies of the administration,” Mr.Shyam Kishore said.
“The Government should ensure food security as country's population touched 120 crore. Otherwise, we will depend on imports, burdening the exchequer,” he added.
The Kisan Morcha leaders condemned the firing on farmers at Sompeta on July 14 when they were agitating against power project. “Farmers and locals should be taken into confidence before setting up any project.
It is unfortunate to target the farmers to safeguard the interests of corporate houses,” Mr.Shyam Kishore said.
The BJP leaders agreed that the party was yet to be strengthened in rural areas. The party would chalk out a programme to build up the organisation in rural areas too by asking the selected leaders to stay in villages at least four days continuously and interact with farmers and understand their problems.
