Government Railway Police arresting contract workers and union leaders at the Railway Station in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

A tense situation prevailed at the Railway Station here on Wednesday as contract workers staged a dharna to protest against the induction of new contract workers in their place.

The contract workers have been working at the station for the past eight years cleaning the platforms, office rooms and station premises.

Though the contractor is changed after a certain period, the workers are being continued.

A new contractor, who took over a few days ago, decided to induct new workers in place of the existing workers.

East Coast Railway Contract Workers Union president R.P. Raju said the Government Railway Police personnel forcibly tried to evict the old workers.

The GRP arrested 45 persons, including 42 workers. East Coast Railway Shramik Union leaders Ch. Gandhi and D. Shaleel called on the striking workers and extended their solidarity.
