The BJP wanted not five but 10 years of Special Category Status for Andhra Pradesh in the State Reorganisation Act when it was in the Opposition but after coming to power it had forgotten its stand and deceived the people of Andhra Pradesh, said YSR Congress leader Botcha Satyanarayana here on Tuesday.
“The NDA government led by [the] BJP proved that its promises have no value and people don’t know whether they can trust the Government. The Centre has made it clear in Parliament that [the] Special Category Status is not part of the Act but [the] Telugu Desam party and Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu have no guts to demand or question the Centre on the Special Category issue, special packages for north coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema, funds for Polavaram projects or any other benefit that is provided for AP in the Act.” Mr. Satyanarayana was addressing a dharna organised by the party at the Collectorate as part of the State-wide agitation against the failures of the Central and State Governments in implementing the Status and other benefits.
The agitation was not a political activity but a programme to put pressure on both the Governments to provide what was due to A.P., he said.
District president of the party Gudivada Amarnath presided and said the progress of the State had come to a halt due to the Centre not according the Status. MLA Boodi Mutyala Naidu, several former MLAs like Tynala Vijaya Kumar, M. Vijaya Prasad, Balidreddy Satyarao, G. Babu Rao, Karanam Dharma Sri, T. Gurumurthy Reddy, Karri Sitaram, party leaders Kola Guruvulu, Pakki Diwakar, Ravi Reddy and others participated.
A nine-page memorandum was submitted to the Government through the Collectorate.
