A large number of Anganwadi workers were held on Friday when they tried to storm the Collectorate after staging a dharna as part of their continuing agitation seeking implementation of assurances such as e fixing a minimum wage of Rs. 10,000 and retirement benefits.
Earlier several hundreds of Anganwadi workers, under the banner of AP Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union participated in the Maha Dharna. Union’s district president P. Sridevi said the Government had failed to fulfil the promise it made after the workers went on a strike last year. Anganwadi workers engaged in four projects were facing a lot of hardship due to meagre salary and lack of other benefits even as they were burdened with additional work.
District secretary of CPI (M) K. Lokanatham criticised the police for taking the Anganwadi workers into custody and demanded that the Government fulfil the promises it made to the workers last year.
A large posse of police personnel, including women constables and officers, were deployed at the Collectorate.
