Sixteen-year-old Vennam Jyothi Surekha, a city archer from the stable of Volga Archery Academy, will under go training with Reo Wilde, a former world champion from the United States of America, at Idaho from October 20, according to Krishna District Archery Association president Velagapudi Ramakrishna here on Thursday.
Speaking to media persons, Mr. Ramakrishna said owing to the initiative of the members of US-based Vennam Foundation, Andhra Cricket Association and other well-wishers, the all-important ten-day trip was made possible. “Vennam Murali of Texas and Vennam Mahesh of New York are taking care of the coaching expenses which will be around 6,500 US dollars. Andhra Cricket Association has come forward to sponsor Rs.1 lakh. This advanced coaching will be of immense help to Surekha as she can enhance her world ranking. She is presently placed at 46 in the world in the compound segment. Last year she was at 57,” he added.
Surekha made history of sorts in Indian archery in early this year, when she won three individual championships (sub junior, junior and senior segments) in one year. “Her performance was recognised by the Archery Association of India and India Book of Records has made a special mention about her feat,” he said.
Citation
The certificate and the citation of the India Book of Records were handed over Surekha by district sports development officer P. Ramakrishna along with SAAP Regional Deputy Director G. Chinnaiah.
The advanced coaching will also help the young archer to compete in the forthcoming international events with confidence as she stands a chance to earn a berth in the Indian compound team for the 2014 Asian Games. “With compound segment is included in Asian Games (2014) and Olympics (2016), Surekha should kick start her preparation in an organised manner and this trip will be the first step towards achieving her goal,” felt her coach Rama Rao.
DSDO P. Ramakrishna said more emphasis will be given for the promotion of archery in the various mandals in Krishna District and the authority was planning to buy two bows.
