Students of Sri Durga Malleswara Siddhartha Women’s College took out a rally here on Thursday as part of Surajya movement suggesting to the people to cast their votes in general elections to candidates who were committed to people’s welfare and have clean track records in their respective fields.
Democracy will flourish only when persons capable of delivering good governance are chosen and such candidates remain accountable to the people even after getting elected to Parliament or State Legislatures, the students asserted.
As youth, they wanted such candidates in power who can improve the quality of education and augment job opportunities that were their main concerns.
Flagging off the rally, former wicket-keeper of Indian cricket team and Andhra Cricket Association Director (Operations) M.S.K. Prasad said that youth should cast their votes to deserving candidates and check credentials of contestants through various means before making their choice.
“Votes are like weapons in the hands of people, for whom there would be no better opportunity than elections to strengthen democracy”, Mr. Prasad added.
College Principal T. Vijaya Lakshmi said youth needed a proper direction to their careers and it was imperative that the youngsters should make a wise choice in the elections lest the same type of power-mongering candidates should stage the dreaded comeback.
Women and girls have made rapid strides in various fields but they still have a lot to be done for their empowerment. While worthy candidates are elected, women should be duly encouraged to play an active role in politics, Mr. Vijaya Lakshmi asserted.
The rally was taken out from the college premises situated on M.G Road to Benz Circle.
