Minister for Water Resources Devineni Umamaheswara Rao said that he, along Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, would perform a special puja to the Godavari river at the Pavitra Sangamam (the name given to point where the Polavaram Right Main Canal meets the Krishna river) on Monday.
The arrival of the Godavari water at the meeting point on Saturday generated a huge excitement in farmers and Telugu Desam leaders and sympathisers. Women folk performed harathi and sprinkled turmeric and vermillion in the waters that came down the canal. Hundreds of people thronged the meeting point to see the brown flood waters of the Godavari mix with the greenish blue waters of the Krishna.
Water Users’ Association Apex Committee member Alla Gopalakrishnaiah said that he had given up eight acres for the Polavaram Right Main Canal (PRCM), but going by the slow pace of the Polavaram canal he never thought he would see the Godavari water coming to the rescue of the Krishna Delta farmers. He said that to begin with 2,400 cusecs reached the Krishna from the Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme.
