They took visitors at PVR Mall in the city by surprise on Saturday. Arriving in a flash, they caught the attention of people with their dance performance to promote usage of clay Ganesh idols during the forthcoming Vinayaka Chavithi festival in the city.
Students of Nalanda Degree College held flash mobs to create awareness among people about the impact of using conventional idols for the festivities. Holding placards, banners and dancing to different tunes, they promoted clay idols in a different way.
The objective was to make people realise the adverse effects of plaster of paris idols on the environment, especially pollution of water bodies caused by it. It is the responsibility of every individual to safeguard the nature and promote eco-friendly measures during festivities is one of the best ways, said A. Pavani, Head of English and Communication Skills Department at the college.
Nearly 50 students from the college participated in the programme. In addition to flash mobs, they asked visitors questions relating to the festivities and those who came up with correct answers were given prizes that were designed and made by the students, she informed.
A group of students held a demonstration of making clay idols and distributed a few idols to interested persons on the occasion.
There are plans to conduct similar awareness programmes at LEPL Mall on Sunday and other locations in the city in the coming days, she claimed.
