Oppose Karnataka reservoir plan on Tungabhadra: CPI

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged the State government to oppose the 35 tmc capacity reservoir upstream of Tungabhadra project planned by the Karnataka government.

CPI State secretary K. Ramakrishna on Thursday said Andhra Pradesh and Telangana never received their due share from Tungabhadra project. The backward areas in Rayalaseema region and Mahabubnagar district in Telangana State were supposed to receive water from the dam. But water was never received from Tungabhadra high level canal or from Rajolibanda diversion scheme. As much as 68 tmc of water has to be released for the high level canals and RDS scheme. At this juncture, if another reservoir was constructed, Andhra Pradesh would never receive water.

Notwithstanding, Irrigation Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao asserted that Rayalaseema would develop on the agricultural front. People were wondering how the State would be benefited with the reservoir proposed by the Karnataka government. The government was requested to place the details before the Krishna Tribunal to get rightful share of waters from Tungabhadra project, he added.
