Up in arms: Medical students staging a protest at Siddhartha Medical College in Vijayawada on Wednesday.

Medical students who completed their postgraduation staged a dharna in front of Siddhartha Medical College, the teaching college of Dr. N.T.R University of Health Sciences, demanding the scrapping of senior residency in private medical colleges here on Wednesday.

The agitating medicos said according to Government Order number 99, dated June 23, 2017 it was compulsory for students who did their courses in Convenor quota to do their Senior Residency in Private Colleges.

Student leader Chaitanya said these students wanted to do their compulsory senior residency in government teaching colleges.

Demanding the scrapping of GO no 99, the agitating students said they would rather working in government hospitals and clinics and serve the poor than treat the rich coming for treatment to private medical college hospitals.

According to G.O. 99, all non-service candidates had to do compulsory government service after completion of postgraduation.

The students wondered why they should do residency in private hospitals when there was need for doctors in government hospitals. The private hospitals which functioned on commercial lines had the means to pay more the ₹ 50,000 a month, the amount stipulated in the G.O. to PG candidates.

Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas was not available in town for them to submit a representation.

Director of Medical Education (DME) Subba Rao said there would be no difference for students who work in private hospitals with regard to either remuneration or work experience when compared to their counterparts working in government hospitals.

Since they did their courses in private colleges, they were obliged to do their Senior Residency there itself.
