Manikanta suicide: professors tender apology

March 27, 2014 06:52 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 09:52 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Students of P.B. Siddhartha College of Arts and Science yet again staged a dharna in front of the Principal’s office on Thursday, protesting the alleged suicide of Atluri Manikanta (20), a student of final-year B.Sc. of the college.

However, things settled down as the professors in question -- P. Babu Rao and K.V.R. Deekshitulu -- tendered their apology to the protesting students.

The college management also assured them of initiating a committee to enquire into the matter.

The students claimed that Manikanta committed suicide by jumping into a canal at his native village in Vuyyuru mandal on March 23, as he was publicly humiliated by the professors, after he was caught carrying slips into the examination hall.

They claimed that Manikanta was forced to take the extreme step after he was publicly stripped in the corridor and threatened with not being allowed to write all the papers.

The students who had staged a four-hour dharna on March 24, were assured by the college management that the professors, who were out of station, would tender an apology for their conduct, upon their return on Wednesday.
