The police have intensified vigil on the activities of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in the State following an alert from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) authorities.

With a series of ISIS activities surfacing in Hyderabad, Mumbai and other cities and arrests made by the investigating agencies in the last few days, police are keeping a vigil on the ISIS suspects and like-minded organisations in the State.

The IB, State and Central sleuths cautioned the top police brass in all districts and the Counter Intelligence wing, which deals with counter terrorist activities.

Online recruitment

According to sources, the ISIS and its sympathisers are trying to lure unemployed youth to their fold by showing the clippings of the brutal killings purportedly masterminded by the US in Iraq and Syria. Islamic State is also pursuing the youth on the need to take up ‘Jihad’ (sacred war).

“We have got information that the ISIS is recruiting youth online and is conducting training programmes through the social media. A strict vigil has been kept on some websites,” said a senior police officer.

There were alleged links to Mumbai blasts and other terrorist activities reported from the country in the past few years to Nuzvid, Nallazarla, Tadepalligudem, Machilipatnam and Vijayawada according to police sources.

SIMI active

“The presence of Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), which was allegedly involved in many terrorist activities in the country, is felt in the State. The banned outfit is active in Andhra Pradesh which is certainly a cause of worry,” an officer told The Hindu preferring anonymity.

“ISIS is updating about its activities including some gory photographs on the websites to promote ‘Jihad’. We have observed that the number of visitors to those websites is very high and we are keeping a tab on the suspects,” the officer added.
