The narrow gaps between central medians on several busy stretches in the city are keeping the motorists on the edge.

Even as the Krishna district administration, in coordination with the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), is promising to improve the road conditions in the city, these gaps between dividers are becoming an obstacle of sorts for free movement of traffic. While openings are proving to be beneficial for many bike riders to squeeze through and cut short their travel distance, this practice is obstructing the flow of traffic coming along either sides of the road, making the spots prone to accidents.

At least half a dozen such unauthorised openings could be noticed on the busy stretches at Kasturbaipet and Siddhartha High School Road in Mogalrajpuram. During rush hour, when the vehicular traffic is at its peak, the two-wheeler riders add to the chaos by crossing the roads through these gaps. A retired railway employee B. Vasantha Kumar said that a gap on the divider at Navodaya School was putting the lives of motorists at risk.

Ministers, MLAs and other VIPs travel on this route regularly, but nothing concrete has been done till now to address the issue, he said.

“I met senior police and municipal officials and submitted a memorandum along with photographs, requesting them to take necessary action in the larger interest of the motorists. The authorities promised to look into the issue. But, the issue still remains a concern,” he said.

A senior citizen K. Krishnamurthy said: “If proper remedial measures are not taken to seal these gaps, it would prove danger to those driving between Kasturbaipet and Mogalrajpuram.”

The bicyclists were also utilising these narrow space to cross the road easily, he added.
