Women organisations hold dharna near Lenin Centre
An outpouring of anger was witnessed in Vijayawada in the wake of the brutal attack that left a paramedical student and her friend in intensive care at New Delhi. Women organisations like Andhra Pradesh Mahila Samakhya, affiliated to National Federation of Indian Women, staged a dharna near Lenin Centre in Vijayawada on Wednesday. The All India Youth Federation (AIYF) condemned the gang rape of the student in a bus, here on Wednesday.
They said that the police should arrest the rapists promptly. Police patrolling needs to be increased. Law needs to be changed so that next time nobody can dare to do such heinous crime. The culprits should get a strong punishment which can be a lesson for others.
APMS state president P. Durga Bhavani said that as many as 2,28,650 atrocities were registered across the country. Of this, 28,400 were registered in Andhra Pradesh alone. Of the total incidents, in only 2,400 cases the culprits were punished.
Vijayawada city stood in second place in the state, while Delhi notoriously stood in first position in entire country, she said, adding the governments have failed to curb the rising number of such crimes against women.
AIYF city general secretary Navaneetham Sambasiva Rao said that the police washed off their hand by arresting only four of the six accused.
All the culprits should be arrested immediately, and stringent punishment should be awarded to them, he said.
