The National Crime Records Bureau’s ‘Crime in India-2013’ report has placed Vijayawada city eighth among the 53 Indian cities in terms of highest crime rate against women.

A total of 2,071 cases against women, including 49 rape cases, were reported in Vijayawada last year. The report also suggests that crime against women in the city is much higher than that of Lucknow (1,431 cases), Pune (1,130), Visakhapatnam (978), Patna (918) and Chennai (838).

Incidence of murders was shocking in Guntur Urban police limits where 44 persons were killed last year alone. However, it was low in Vijayawada. As many as 29 murders were reported in Vijayawada, while the same was 30 in Visakhapatnam, according to the report.

Similarly, the rate of abduction and kidnapping of girls in Guntur was on the higher side with 34 women were kidnapped/abducted for gains last year. The number of dowry deaths was alarming in Krishna and Guntur districts. As many as 26 women had lost their lives due to harassment for dowry in Krishna district, including 12 in Vijayawada. A total of 23 dowry deaths were reported in Guntur district, including seven in Guntur urban.

Further, Visakhapatnam earned a dubious distinction with the highest number of rape cases of 67 among the cities in Coastal Andhra cities .
