The Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI) is launching a ‘proof of concept’ of real-time authentication on the basis of Aadhaar cards on February 27 to get rid of fraudulent Customer Application Forms (CAF).

“Six mobile phone service providers – Airtel, Idea, Reliance Jio, Tata, Telenor, Vodafone - are participating in the pilot project, which will be run for eight weeks before rolling out across the country,” said COAI director-general Rajan S. Mathews.

Acknowledging that fake CAF posed a major problem, Mr. Mathews said the COAI had resolved to check the veracity of Aadhaar numbers on the spot when customers approach for activation of services.
