The Muslim United Front demanded that ten per cent quota be set aside for the Muslims in seats for educational institutions or jobs. Muslim United Front president Habeebur Rahman and secretary Abdul Khuddus Basha addressing a press conference here on Tuesday said unless this was taken up by the Congress party which was at the helm of affairs at the Centre, the Muslims would not sail with the party they said.
The Central government should take full responsibility for the dismissal of the 4.5 per cent reservation for Muslims by the High Court, the leaders said. A hurried resolution was passed keeping in mind the elections in Uttar Pradesh. A sub-quota of 4.5 per cent was carved out of the 27 per cent quota for OBCs in a hasty manner, they said.
Though the quota of 4.5 per cent was set aside for the Muslims in educational institutions and jobs, no instructions were given to any of the Government departments. Though leaders of the Muslim community made several representations there was absolutely no proper response from the government.
The efforts of the Central government were pale in comparison with the efforts made by former Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy. Dr. Reddy got the best legal experts to attend to the case and when those opposed to the reservations to the Muslims created various legal hurdles.
He held regular review meetings to monitor the progress of the cases in court. The Central government failed to take any such steps, they said.
