A breach on the bunds of the Grand Anicut canal which occurred on Thursday kept the Public Works Department officials on their toes right through Friday.

The department pressed into service a large number of men and machine to plug the breach.

Housing and Urban Development Minister R. Vaithilingam inspected the work on plugging a breach on the bund of the Grand Anicut canal at Maraneri in Thanjavur taluk on Friday.

The breach occurred on Thursday for 25 metres and water from the river flowed into adjacent paddy fields and other places. Public Works Department engineers swung into action and took up plugging of the breach.

Nearly 130 are attending to the problem.

About 10,000 sand bags had been utilised, tipper lorries, and bulldozers were used to plug the breach. Water release into Grand Anicut canal had been reduced consequent to the breach.

MLAs M. Rangasamy , M. Rathnasamy , K. Baskaran, District Collector, Sampath, Superintending Engineer, PWD, Thanjavur circle, and Kalingaraj, Executive Engineer, Grand Anicut Canal, accompanied the Minister.
