Notwithstanding issue of notices, a large number of transport corporation employees continued with their strike even as government buses were operated in Tiruchi region engaging private persons on daily wages on Sunday.
About 95% of the transport corporation employees of Tiruchi region were still on strike with only a section of those affiliated to the ruling party union and some on the verge of retirement reporting for duty, said N. Mani, deputy general secretary of AITUC-affiliated Tamil Nadu State Transport Employees Federation.
A TNSTC official said nearly 85% of the buses were operated in Tiruchi region covering Tiruchi, Perambalur and Ariyalur. The official admitted that a majority of the State transport corporation buses were operated engaging drivers of private buses and goods carriers.
Government buses were being operated mostly by private persons who did not have the required driving experience in driving passenger vehicles, claimed Mr. Mani.
