Trains cancelled

The Southern Railway has cancelled Chennai Egmore – Tirunelveli special train (06099) scheduled to leave Chennai Egmore on January 8, and Train No.06100 the Tirunelveli – Chennai Egmore special train (06100), scheduled to leave Tirunelveli on January 10, owing to a poor patronage, according to a press release.

Compensation paid

The families of four persons who were killed in the building recent collapse at West Uthira Street in Srirangam were handed over a compensation of Rs.1.02 lakh each from the Farmers Protection Scheme on Thursday.

T.P. Poonachi, Minister for Khadi and Village Industries, handed over the cheques to the bereaved families in the presence of R. Manoharan, Chief Whip, P. Kumar, MP, and K.S. Palanisamy, Collector.

Special camp

The Mahatma Eye Hospital in Thennur in the city will conduct a special camp for screening and treatment of squint and other congenital eye defects on the hospital premises on December 27, according to a press release.

The camp will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and persons with eye defects, including children and adults can attend the camp.

IFAC conference

from February 1

The Department of Instrumentation and Control Engineering of the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, will host the fourth edition of the five-day International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) conference, ACODS 2016, from February 1, according to an NIT release. The conference will focus on the technical challenges, research updates, and breakthrough innovations in the field of control systems and optimisation. Plea for allowing

jallikattu

The Veera Mutherayar Munnetra Sangam has urged the State and Union governments to take steps to grant permission for conducting jallikattu. In a statement here, K. Selvakumar, founder-president of the sangam, said jallikattu had been a traditional sport and references to it are found in ancient inscriptions and sculptures.

The association will stage an agitation in Tiruchi if the governments failed to take steps for the conduct of the jallikattu during the Pongal season, he said.

Body found

The body of a woman, aged about 50, was found afloat on the Uyyakondan canal near the Uzhavar Sandhai in Anna Nagar, Thennur on Friday.

On being alerted, the police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. Efforts were on to establish the identity of the woman.
