The Tiruchi district unit of the Magalir Thittam celebrated Aadi Perukku by organising a day-long exhibition of products made by members of women self help groups at S. N. Marriage hall in Srirangam on Thursday.
The expo that was declared open by Collector Jayashree Muralidharan hosts products made by members of SHGs in about 15 stalls.
Choices aplenty
The members of women SHGs across the district have displayed areca nut plates, baby beds, school lunch bags, imitating jewellery, television and mixer covers, hand and cloth bags, dolls, wire bags, jute bags, foot rests, foot mats, korai mats.
Eye-catching handicrafts to suit various occasions like Navaratri Golu; readymade garments; and embroidery saris provide added attraction to the show.
Training
Some the SHGs have been imparted training in making pickles of various flavours, ‘appalam’, herbal medicines, biscuits, cakes, juices.
These SHGs utilised the opportunity to showcase their talent and find marketing avenues.
An SHG had specialised in making ‘vazhaipoo vadai’ and it sold like hot cake.
According to Ms. Jayashree Muralidharan, the objective of the exhibition was to provide marketing avenues to SHGs for their products, which will go a long way in augmenting rural economy.
