Police personnel nominated as Child Welfare Officers in different police stations in Tiruchi district were sensitised to a gamut of issues relating to child rights, protection and prevention of crimes against children at a meeting held here on Monday.
The day-long programme organised by the District Child Protection Unit covered a slew of topics on child rights and protection to enable the participants keep themselves abreast of the provisions of the relevant acts and guidelines dealing with children.
Inaugurating the programme, Superintendent of Police S.Rajeswari said it was essential for the Child Welfare Officers to follow the guidelines specified while dealing with children.
Family background, poverty, and ignorance were some of the factors responsible for juveniles committing crimes.
She asked the Child Welfare Officers to visit homes accommodating children in their respective jurisdiction along with officials of the District Child Protection Unit periodically.
This was essential to get information on the status of children residing in those places.
The programme featured separate sessions on Child rights, protection and kidnap, violence against children and the need for a coordinated action, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000 and the ways to manage stress.
