Relaying V.O. Chidambaram Road, which was crying for attention of the authorities concerned for so long, has begun bringing relief to residents and road users.
The road in the heart of the city was reduced to tatters due to extensive use over a period of time. It was riddled with potholes and was hardly motorable. It turned worse with the recent rains.
Considering the long-pending demand of road users, the Tiruchirappalli City Corporation had decided to restore the road on a “priority basis.” A sum of about Rs.33 lakh had been earmarked for it. A senior official of the corporation told The Hindu that the road, which was once considered as a street, had been classified as an extensive used one. Hence, it would be re-laid under the paver block method. It would withstand movement of heavy vehicles particularly buses. Initial road reclamation work had begun.
A sum of Rs.40 lakh had been earmarked for relaying Rockins Road. The work would commence very soon, he added.
