The Government headquarters hospital (GH) in the town will soon be upgraded on a par with a medical college hospital.

The State government have decided to upgrade all the government headquarters hospitals in the districts which did not a medical college into “medical college-level hospitals”, to enable people of these districts get specialised treatment for chronic diseases. The Chief Minister made announcement in this regard at the State Assembly recently and the government has already issued GO.The GH will house 16 super-speciality wards, along with posting of adequate doctors and paramedical staff. Although the present GH is situated in the heart of the town, infrastructure are not possible . Hence, the district administration and the State Health Department have decided to shift the GH to a new site. “We have already identified a suitable site and a decision will be taken shortly”, said Distrit Collector Dr. Darez Ahamed district collector. He said the GH enjoyed a good patronage from the people. At present, more than 70 per cent of the deliveries take place in the GH, and the rest at private hospitals . This was compared to only 50 per cent of deliveries taking place in the GH here till a couple of years ago.

The upgrade proposal into a medical college-level hospital will attract more people to the GH, Dr. Ahamed said.

The government sanctioned 20 new health sub-centres to the district last year. Construction work are under progress at an outlay of Rs. 3 crore. For the current year, the government has sanctioned four more centres to the district. Each centre to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 17 lakh, including staff quarters.

To a question, Dr. Ahamed said all anganwadis in the district will be functioning in own buildings by next year. New buildings are being constructed for many primary health centres, he added.
