Despite suffering drubbing in the Tiruchi Corporation and town panchayats, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) put up a spirited show winning all three municipalities in the district.
DMK candidate V. Santha defeated her nearest rival Rajarajeswari of the AIADMK by 3, 342 votes to become the chairman of the Manapparai municipality. Ms. Santha polled 10,770 votes, while votes polled by Ms. Rajarajeswari were 7,428.
N. Murali (DMK) was declared elected as the chairman of the Thuraiyur municipality having beaten V. Ravi of the AIADMK by a little over 2,000 votes.
The votes polled by the DMK and the AIADMK candidates were 8,243 and 6,225.
E. Kayambu (DMK) has been elected as the chairman of the Thuvakudi municipality.
He defeated L. Mohandas (AIADMK) by a margin of 2,865 votes.
Mr. Kayambu polled 6,785 votes, while Mr. Mohandoss secured 3,920 votes.
The DMK candidates emerged winners in 12 out of the 21 wards in Thuvakudi Municipality and the AIADMK in six wards.
Independents
The rest three wards were bagged by two independents and a Congress member.
Of the 24 wards in Thuraiyur municipality, the DMK bagged 10 closely followed by the AIADMK which won in seven wards. Independents emerged victorious in four wards, Congress in two and DMDK in one. As for Manapparai municipality, the AIADMK won in 11 wards, DMK in 10, independents in 3, Congress in two and the CPI triumphed in one ward.
