The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) has decided to seek the approval of the Directorate of Town and Country Planning for the proposed Karur Medical College.

Most of the government medical colleges in the State have ground plus two or three floors. However, the new college will have ground plus seven floors (G+7), thereby necessitating the DME to seek the approval of town planning.

S. Revathi, Dean, Karur Medical College, told The Hindu that the Public Works Department had devised a new plan by taking into account the 17.49 acres of land at Sanapiratti, which is under the control of DME. The land was recently handed over to the directorate by the Karur Municipality.

The old plan, which was originally proposed for 30.27 acres of land, was shelved as the process for taking over the remaining land was still on. However, steps had been expedited to get the remaining land from Karur Municipality.

Except for some fine-tuning, the chief architect of the PWD had completed the design of the medical college buildings, she said. As per the new plan, the out-patient and in-patient wards would function in the same block. It would have G+7 floors. The IP wards would function on the top floors of the block.

Similarly, the administrative block would also have G+7 floors. Classrooms, lecture halls and faculty facilities would function from the block.

Hostels, faculty quarters and staff quarters would be constructed adjacent to the administrative block. It had also been decided to build a state-of-the-art library.

There might not be any change in the original estimate — ₹229 crore — sanctioned for the project, Dr. Revathi said. A final discussion would be held shortly to clear the new building plan and design and send it to local planning for approval. The approval process was expected to be completed within two weeks.
