Contributions of Tamil University to linguistics comes to light at seminar

The Tamil University can contribute significantly for research in linguistics, said K. Karunakaran, former Vice Chancellor, Tamil University, here on Thursday.

Inaugurating a national seminar organised by Prof. S. Agawsthiyalingam Memory Trust at the Tamil University, Dr. Karunakaran said that Tamil University was a unique University, wherein its research in linguistics, language and communication can enhance research work in other fields as well. “Language and communication is important even for science research,” said Dr. Karunakaran. Urging researchers not to consider the work as a ‘degree generating machine' he said that their work should help society.

Dr. Karunakaran released two books on the occasion. He released ‘Agasthiyam' which was received by S. Rajaram, former Head of School of Indian Languages, Tamil University. Another book Kenmai" was received by K.Arangan, former head of Linguistics Department.

Rajaram said that late Agasthiyalingam, who was a former Vice Chancellor of Tamil University, popularised linguistics and its research. His contribution to transformation grammar and applied linguistics was very significant.

T.Chandrakujmar, Member, Vice-chancellor in-charge committee; V. S. Arul Raj, head of Linguistics Department; S. Parimala, Registrar, Tamil University; R.Muralidharan, assistant professor and seminar co-ordinator also spoke.
